# Transcription

> Local and cloud speech-to-text on desktop.

Overlay Desktop can use:

* **Local helpers** (for example bundled arm64 transcription binaries) when
  present and permitted.
* **Cloud / hosted** enhancement or models when configured through Overlay
  Server and the user’s entitlements.

Microphone permission is required for capture. Local helpers are Apple Silicon
only and ship as pinned native artifacts in official builds.
