# Privacy and diagnostics

> What Overlay Desktop collects by default.

Optional diagnostics are **off by default**. When enabled, data should follow
the desktop [privacy policy](https://github.com/LayerNorm/overlay-desktop/blob/main/privacy-policy.md)
with redaction and bounded retention.

Hosted product analytics on Overlay Server are separate from local desktop
diagnostics and are governed by the website privacy policy at getoverlay.io.
